ABSTRACT.
Currently, corn straws are mostly treated as agricultural residues and directly burned, leading to haze production and environment pollution. However, as a renewable resource, corn straws can grow in a short period and are more time-saving as compared with wood. Therefore, it is necessary to explore novel effective utilization modes of corn straws as a wood substitute material for efficient waste utilization, energy conservation, and environmental protection. The appearance of corn straw reconstituted materials exactly solves this problem. Corn straw reconstituted materials are new wood substitute structural materials processed via special reconstruction technology while preserving original fibers of corn straws which possess a lot of advantages such as high strength, favorable corrosion resistance, wide source, moth-proof and moisture-proof properties, environmental protection, and energy conservation. In this study, compressive mechanical performance and some crucial parameters of corn straw reconstituted materials were experimentally determined. The innovations lie in finding and determining compressive mechanical parameters of the novel corn straw reconstituted materials and confirming that these parameters can be utilized as the mechanical indices of structural materials, which can thus lay solid theoretical foundation for using corn straw reconstituted materials as the wood substitute structural materials. Further, the effective recycling of corn straws as the structural materials rather than a kind of agricultural residues can be promoted. Simultaneously, the research results of the cross-sectional performance of the corn straw reconstituted materials in two directions also provide effective basic materials for the integration of corn straw reconstituted materials.
